In
1999, VITA-TECH's DNA Diagnostic Services moved into a larger, state-of-the-art
DNA diagnostic laboratory at the new VITA-TECH facility. The DNA Laboratory,
first opened in 1995, is specially designed and equipped for development
and implementation of diagnostic tests based on the analysis of nucleic
acid, the genetic blueprint for all living organisms.
Services
available include DNA fingerprinting for individual identification and
parentage verification for many species, non-invasive techniques for
sex determination in birds and exotic animals as well as tests for the
detection of genetic disorders and infectious diseases. Additionally,
the DNA diagnostic laboratory is licensed to perform PCR based tests
for diseases such as Porcine Stress Syndrome (PSS) and Equine
Hyperkalemic Periodic Paralysis (HYPP).
Research
is an integral part of our efforts in this area and has already produced
several exciting discoveries leading to new products. Developments
from our laboratory include a much improved diagnostic test for feline
enteric corona virus (FeCV) and its associated disease, feline infectious
peritonitis (FIP). VITA-TECH has also developed several rapid diagnostic
test kits for enteric pathogens in both animals and humans. We are
certain that many more exciting developments lie ahead.
Most
recently, VITA-TECH has partnered with VetGen,
a world leader in purebred animal genetic research and genetic testing.
Through a licence agreement, VITA-TECH now offers our clients a more
comprehensive array of DNA-based tests for dogs and horses. These
new tests are recognized worldwide and are becoming essential for
the success of high quality canine and equine breeding programs.
